Has a coach ever been fired at halftime? Social media calls for urgent firing of Chargers

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Chargers led by their second-string quarterback Easton Stick went against the Las Vegas Raiders in their week 15 matchup. The TNF game between two division rivals was expected to be a close one, but head coach Brandon Staley and his team ended up suffering a humiliating loss against the Raiders.

The Chargers were playing so badly, that the Raiders took a 42-0 lead at halftime, the largest first-half lead in the Raiders’ franchise history and the biggest deficit in the Chargers’. As the Chargers fans looked ahead of a 9th loss of the season they called for the firing of the third-year head coach Brandon Staley.

The Chargers were starting their second-stringer since their franchise QB Justin Herbert has been ruled out with a season-ending injury. However, that is no excuse for his defense giving up a 40-burger in one half of an NFL game. At halftime, Staley told sideline reporter Kaylee Hartung that they did not come ready to play in one of their crucial games.

As everyone expected, Staley and his team did not fight for their pride in the second half. They did manage to score three touchdowns in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for them to avoid humiliation in front of the Raiders home crowd.

As for the Raiders, they had a great outing on Thursday and registered a crucial division victory. Rookie quarterback Aidan O’Connell managed to put up impressive numbers as he threw for 248 yards and 4 touchdowns. With that victory, they improved to a 6-8 record and are still hoping for a postseason spot.

Nonetheless, the Chargers fell to a 5-9 record with their loss on Thursday. Besides, with Justin Herbert ruled out for the rest of the season, their playoff hopes are all but gone. It wouldn’t surprise anyone if Staley gets fired before the end of the season. If he does get fired, the Chargers head coaching job would be one of the most desired jobs in the off-season market.
