Farthest thing from the truth - Colby Covington opens up on unpaid dues to his striking coach,

Publish date: 2024-07-30

UFC Welteriweight Colby Covington is one short of competition considering on UFC 268 he proved why he is the second best welterweight in the world after the current champion Kamaru Usman, however, “Chaos” Covington is not short of rivalries regardless. Covington is going to face his former teammate, more over best friends, who is now is a bitter rival in Jorge Masvidal.

Masvidal, who’s been fighting professionally for almost 2 decades, is one of the biggest names in the UFC today, courtesy to his rise in the year 2019 when he won all of his 3 fights then via knockouts, with two of those knockouts going viral against Darren Till and Ben Askren and the one with Askren being the fastest knockout in UFC history.

Things have pretty much turned around in their friendship when both Covington and Masvidal started getting massive public attention coupled with stardom and are now wishing blood bath on each other by their own hands once they square of each other inside the octagon this weekend.

Colby Covington explains the 5% rule of his former training center where Jorge Masvidal still trains

Ahead of his UFC 272 main event against Masvidal, Covington has been repeatedly clearing all the issues regarding his payment dues that Masvidal has blamed him for. More precisely, Masvidal claimed that Covington has not paid his former coaches, particularly Masvidal’s current striking coach and Covington’s former coach Paulino Hernandez. As per Masvidal, Covington owes $12,500 to Hernandez and Covington calls it a blatant lie by Masvidal.

“That’s the farthest thing from truth in the entire world,” Covington said in his interview with Fox Sports Australia “Jorge is so delusional he doesn’t even understand that what he’s trying to base his percentage off of was something I didn’t even make that much money that night. The reporters said I made X amount of money that night but I made half that night so it’s a complete lie

If you ask his owner, his master, Dan Lambert [founder, American Top Team] [Covington’s former training center]… there’s a rule at American Top Team, when you fight you don’t pay any of your coaches you pay 5% gym fee to the team and that’s it he doesn’t want you paying any other percentages to the coaches because he’s gonna distribute his 5% out evenly to the coaches so I didn’t even have to pay any money to this striking coach Paulino Hernandez. So these claims are false, it’s fake news, it’s a lie.” concludes Covington.

What do you make of Covington’s reasoning for not paying Masvidal’s coach? Do you think he has a reason with the rule he laid out? Also, who do you think gets the win at UFC 272, Masvidal or Covington? For the hardcore fans, they can see Covington can strike despite his specialisation in wrestling and Masvidal too has an incredible wrestling defence, the fight can be a full blown fist fight but not to overlook the grappler vs striker aspect as well.
